How are we this Sunday? I have so far hauled myself out of bed and changed the oil in my Outback. I’ve been keeping to a 5,000 mile schedule. The original from Subaru was something like 6,000 or 7,500 but I think Subaru was overly optimistic with the switch to 0W20 based on all the oil consumption issues people have been having with the FB25. By 5,000 it’s black and hasn’t burned a whole quart so it seems like a good changing interval. Interestingly none of the aftermarket oil filters I’ve bought that claim to fit this motor are anywhere near as tall as the OEM. I know that doesn’t necessarily mean that the OEM has more filter surface but I’m not risking it. I pick up filters and drain plug crush rings by the 6 at dealer and it really isn’t much more expensive than the parts store.

I blend 0w30 and 0w40 to get a 3.5+hths number. 5k oil changes and 10k trans pan drop fluid change. Consistently near 40mpg on the freeway now.

Is it synthetic oil? My RAV4 has conventional oil and I get it changed every 3,000. No problems on that schedule. Every car after 2015 seems to have more expensive synthetic, though.

Oh, and an aem panel filter, sti filter is the same as the fb25. Filters great and lasts a long time, non oiled. When u get the coolant flushed next year I’m going with a 70/30 water/antifreeze blend along with amsoil coolant surfactant. Upgraded engine and trans oil cooler sometime next year or two. Zero oil consumption since new.

I’m down to 3000-4000 mile intervals. This 7000 mile cra p does not work with a modern subaru.

Does the CVT not have a drain plug like the 4/5EAT did? I understand the benefits of dropping the pan regularly, but every 10k miles would be so annoying.

I was always under the impression that Purolator made the OEM subaru filters. The Subaru filter for the EJ was identical to the 14610.

In five years we have 36k and that’s the car we take on long trips. I pay a good shop to do it and it’s 80 bux with me supplying the fluid.
I’m not aware of a drain plug on the trans.

The eu service interval is much shorter 45kilometers severe service is 28k miles. A pan drop every 10k miles at 5qts is 40%. Puts me just above that schedule. Given the price of a new trans I consider it cheap.

Oh yeah, I always drained & filled my trans fluid at 10-15k. I was just commenting on “pan drop” vs drain & fill...we might be using different terms for the same thing.

The torque converter isn't drained, so we may be.

Full synthetic. I use Mobil 1. It’s more expensive but not really that bad. I keep eyes out for sales and usually get the 0W20 high mileage version for under $35 for a 5 qt jug.

A service for my mom’s CR-V (synthetic) is at least twice as much as that. Granted, it’s every 6,000 or so miles and the cost is proportional, but still. Definitely paying for service, and Mavis doesn’t even report to CarFax.
